Dear friend of homoeopathy,
It is said "that a man is often a stranger in his own land". So it has been with Samuel Hahnemann (1755-1843) the founder of the science of homoeopathy.
For over 200 years, the land of Hahnemann´s birth has still to embrace the impact of his genius and the written legacy of his insights on the treatment of disease.
The German government continues to withhold support for homoeopathy even though it has been extensively documented to be an effective method of treating and curing a wide range of illnesses.
At the present time, German physicians seeking training in homoeopathic medicine are left to their own devises e.g. by attending occasional seminars, through reading homoeopathic literature or (on rare occasions) to be fortunate enough to be able to study in a clinical setting with an experienced homoeopath.
During my years of medical training and early practice, I have had the honour and the privilege to have studied under such dedicated and eminent homoeopaths as: Dr. med. Jost Künzli (1915-1992) of St. Gall/Switzerland, Dr. med. Will Klunker (1923-2002) of Heiden/Switzerland, and Dr. med. Georg von Keller (1919-2003) of Tübingen/Germany.
For many years, my thoughts have been directed towards establishing a school that would encompass the legacy of Samuel Hahnemann and those renowned homoeopaths who have dauntlessly followed in his footsteps.
In 2003, an opportunity presented itself to purchase two older homes in the small village of Glees. The buildings needed extensive repairs before they could meet the requirements for classroom teaching and scientific research.
The renovation of the Academy´s future site was completed in the summer of 2004.
The Glees Academy of Homoeopathic Physicians is comprised of classroom, administrative office, research facilities, and an extensive homoeopathic library - the result of combining my own library and that of the late Dr. von Keller as well as that of the late Christopher Ellithorp (1946-2004) and of Dr. Pilaka Krishnamurty.
Enrollment is limited to 10 licensed medical doctors. An 18 months basic course in homoeopathy is held on Saturdays. Students will also have access to my clinic to see patients and receive practical instructions. For the advanced homoeopathic students there are series of seminars on a variety of subjects. From time to time, there are Wednesday evening sessions to give an opportunity for students to share their experiences and to ask questions relating to their classes. On special days of historical importance to homoeopathy i.e. Hahnemann´s birthday, etc. talks will be given by selected lecturers.
Unfortunately, at the present time, there will be no classes held in English - but this could change as the scope of the Academy expands.
An important adjunct to the Academy´s work is directed towards revising the Materia Medica Homoeopathica (MMRH-Project). The standard works of T.F. Allen´s (Encyclopaedia) and C. Hering´s (Guiding Symptoms) are over 100 years old - which at the time of their publication were already incomplete with mistakes in translation, omissions etc. Consequently, to organise in correct sequence all the reliable provings and clinical symptoms from published case histories is vitally important towards compiling a new Materia Medica Homoeopathica as well as an accurate Repertory. (The Academy´s library is of immeasurable help in this effort.) Up to now 33 volumes have been published.
The library´s facilities will be available, by appointment, to those wishing to further their own research endeavors. Only a staff member will handle all requests for photocopies and also make and mail copies to those unable to come to the library.
The ability to meet the financial obligations of the Academy e.g. maintenance, salaries, utilities, etc. will reflect on the growth of the school. In order to maintain and secure the integrity of the Academy´s goals and objectives, the expenses incurred for establishing this endeavour has been borne solely by our family.
It goes without saying, that donations from friends and supporters will always be gratefully welcomed.
It is our earnest hope that the steadfast dedication that has led to the realisation of the Glees Academy of Homoeopathic Physicians will encourage "the friends of homoeopathy" to rally around our fledgling Academy with their wholehearted participation and support.
